The Shimel view on Vernier's exit of the NAC market, and calling all Vernier customers
I have been uncharacteristically quiet regarding the recent public announcements that Vernier seems to have abandoned its NAC strategy. I wanted to let a respectable time period pass, as I did not want to be perceived as dancing on a competitors grave. Under a new name and what sounds like a new cap table, Vernier is going to pursue some sort of identity based access control policy (I think that is still a form of NAC). I hope the third time is the charm for them and this business model works for them. My bud Matt Hines, when not basking in the glow of Beantown sports, writes in his InofWorld blog about the name change. Matt mentions that I have touched on the subject of NAC players dropping out before. Then another friend Bill Brenner over at SearchSecurity writes about the "quiet" move by Vernier. Stealthy is more like it. Not sure why Bill lumps us with the malware vendors, but hey at least he mentioned us!
Frankly, though I had heard about this move some time ago. In fact the Vernier site had no management team listed for some time and I assumed there was a reorg underway. To me this is just another '49er not finding the gold mine. The only one who made money was the one selling the prospecting equipment. Vernier was originally a wireless play I believe and jumped on the NAC bandwagon. You should ask the same of your NAC vendor. When the goldrush ends and the music stops, will your NAC vendor still be there? I think there will be others following Verniers move here. Caveat Emptor - buyer beware!
I guess this means that Vernier did not really have 30% of the NAC market that their CEO Simon used to claim in his public presentations. Frankly, I will miss the chance for a good laugh. I always thought it took a large set to stand up and make that claim! On the other hand, I don't want to use this event as a chance to jump up and down and talk about how StillSecure has thought of everything and how superior we are, not being just a NAC like a certain inline NAC vendor did on their blog. What I will say is this:
Vernier's departure puts their customers in a precarious position. I am offering help. You will see a special offer to Vernier customers to protect them by migrating over to Safe Access NAC painlessly and econcomically in the next day or two. I don't mean to be too salesy here and if you think I am, I apologize. But if you are a Vernier NAC customer this could be of interest to you. Any Vernier customers who are nervous about what to do with their NAC feel free to contact me here and I can offer StillSecure help and advice. In fact any NAC customers who are nervous about your current NAC solution are welcome to contact me personally for a stable NAC solution in this time of the NAC wars with victims falling by the wayside everyday. Don't be a victim!
